Leadership is a vast subject. Although the word is overused, most of us struggle to understand it clearly.

To make it simple, I’ve often been asked for my leadership top tips. - And I’ve been reluctant to answer.

The moment you make a list, you think of a whole string of other items that you can’t do without. – No list like this is ever complete or definitive.

However, with this in mind, these top tips are central to leadership; especially in business. Whether you're the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation or a one-man band, these top tips are central to achieving your goals.

However simple these may seem, we should all ask, “how well I’m doing all of these?”

  1. Get focused and make a plan. Do you really know what you want to achieve in the next six months,  year and two years? Have you broken your goals down into achievable stages?
  2. Work your plan consistently. Do you know which tasks are most are vital? What must you do and what could you leave out? No one wants to be a busy fool.
  3. Measure your progress. Have you decided what to measure? And having decided, are you both measuring and reviewing… regularly?
  4. Correct and learn from your mistakes. Things go wrong! But is it the same old things? If it is, is there something we need to learn, improve or change.
  5. Know when to change (and when not to). One of the greatest of all leadership challenges is making that call, “Keep doing what we’re doing, it’s going to change.” Or “We’ve done our best, it’s not changing. We need to change.” – These are the kind of decisions that take wisdom, courage and insight!
  6. Nurture your people and contacts. Whatever we achieve in life, it always involves other people. Treasure the people that matter to you most.
  7. Communicate and Involve. Last, but vital at every stage, keep everybody in your team involved and and clear about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and how you hope to achieve it.

In the coming weeks I’ll be expanding on these points in my blogs and articles... .
